A new technology has emerged known as LIFI, which could provide internet at speed of faster than WIFI that we use today. Scientists have invented that the speed of the internet through LIFI can be 224 GB per second, which is equivalent to download 18 movies in the blink of an eye. The growing desire of getting high-speed internet has pushed WIFI’s capacity to its limit. Wifi is achieved by transmitting data through radio waves, but can only transfer so much at a time. As radio frequencies are using for other purposes and also regulated heavily, the data is going to struggle to find a spot in a line. Wifi is simply running out of space.

The efficiency level of the base station which is accountable for the transmission of radio waves is around 5 percent and most of the energy being used to cool the stations. The security of transmitting sensitive data is also a problem, as radio waves travel through solid objects like walls and doors. Similar to radio waves, the visible light spectrum is also a part of the electromagnetic wave but the difference is that the visible light has a spectrum 10 thousand times larger than radio wave, which means LIFI (light fidelity) has a huge capacity. So instead of transmitting the data through one data stream using WIFI, Visible light could make it possible to transmit the same data through thousands of data streams.

Lifi works by flashing LED lights on and off at incredibly fast speeds, sending data to a receiver in binary code. It is essentially an ultra-fast version through which the flashlight became on and off to create more code. The flashes occur so fast that it cannot be seen by naked eye. Not only in abroad but India also planning to implement the technology. The ministry of Electronics and IT has successfully tested the technology in a recent pilot project, which was conducted in association with IIT Madras at its campus along with the company PHILIPS. The managing director of PHILIPS, Mr. Sumit Joshi has stated that the company is more devoted towards innovation, new and emerging technologies.

LIFI technology was come into the picture in 2011, 7 years ago by Herald Hass, professor of mobile communications at the University of Edinburgh. After this incident company like Google and organization Like NASA have tested this technology. In spite of the technology LIFI, India has experimented some other technologies like WhiteSpace, which utilize the unused spectrum between television channels to relay data. Google has tested the potential of transmitting data using balloons floating at a height of 20 Km using 4G and LTE technology. But the WhiteSpace technology required licensed mobile spectrum.

On the other hand, LIFI technology does not depend on mobile spectrum, having higher speed than WIFI, eliminates neighboring network interference, does not create interference in sensitive electronics and making it better to use an environment like hospitals and aircraft. This technology can be used to such area that cannot be reached by fiber but has access to electricity, difficult terrains areas.
