Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux have announced they are separating and love is officially dead.

In a statement, the former couple said: "We have decided to announce our separation. This decision was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year. We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship."

Jen and Justin said they wanted to "convey the truth directly" about their decision to end their marriage, saying they are "determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for each other".

Oh dear, this is getting too much.

Timeline:

2007: Jen and Justin (reportedly) meet for the first time on the set of the film Tropic Thunder, which he co-wrote. "I remember thinking he was very dark," Jen told POPSUGAR of her first impression. "At first you think he could be, like, a serial killer."

June 2012: Justin tells Extra he "could not be happier" in his life right now. "I always go to bed thinking I'm the luckiest guy in the world," he adds.

August 2012: An engagement! Justin pops the question at his 41st birthday dinner at NYC eatery Blue Hill.

"Justin Theroux had an amazing birthday on Friday, receiving an extraordinary gift when his girlfriend, Jennifer Aniston, accepted his proposal of marriage," the groom-to-be's rep tells People.

July 2013: According to the gossip mill, the couple delayed their wedding to avoid overlapping with the wedding of Jen's ex Brad Pitt to Angelina Jolie, but Jen paints a different picture to The Associated Press. "We just want to do it when it's perfect, and we're not rushed, and no one is rushing from a job or rushing to a job," she says. "And, you know, we already feel married."

July 2014: Jennifer raves about her fiancé in a conversation with Women's Wear Daily. "He's just so beautiful and handsome to me," she says. "Those eyes just knock me out every day … He just gets better every year. He's just like a lost gem in the sand, and he's just always been there and been brilliant."

June 2015: Talking to People about her life in her 40s, Jennifer says Justin "was the best thing about this decade."

August 2015: The couple gets married in a surprise wedding in the backyard of their home in Bel Air! Their guests — the likes of Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, Sandra Bullock, Sia, and Friends pals Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow — thought the celebration was just a birthday party for Justin.

uly 2016: Amid constant pregnancy rumors, Jennifer publishes a HuffPost essay about "the sport-like scrutiny and body shaming that occurs daily under the guise of 'journalism.'"

"Here's where I come out on this topic," she writes. "We are complete with or without a mate, with or without a child. We get to decide for ourselves what is beautiful when it comes to our bodies. That decision is ours and ours alone."

February 2018: It's all over. Shortly after Life & Style reports that they're on the rocks, the couple confirms the split, saying the decision "was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year" and they want to make the announcement publicly to reduce speculation. "Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly," they say. "Whatever else is printed about us that is not directly from us is someone else's fictional narrative. Above all, we are determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for one another."
