Top five Bollywood openers of 2018
It has been less than a quarter of a year, and we have seen the release of various Bollywood films, big and small, that have made a mark at the box office. While some have been spectacular failures, others have been enormous successes. When the year began, it was Tiger Zinda Hai that was dominating the box office. Its reign was put to an end by the highly controversial epic Padmaavat. Then came PadMan and others. A fairly recent release Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety became a surprise hit, earning many times more money than its budget indicated. Here are the biggest openers of 2018 yet.

1.Padmaavat: Based on Malik Muhammad Jayasi's Awadhi epic poem Padmavat, Padmaavat became one of the most contentious movies of Bollywood due to rumours of a dream sequence involving Rani Padmini and the invader king Alauddin Khilji. After months of struggle involving right-wing organisations, politicians, death threats, release delays, the film was finally released at the end of January and became a megahit by riding on controversies. It is also the biggest opener of 2018 so far with Rs 19 crore first day earnings.
2.PadMan: Akshay Kumar essayed the role of a taboo-breaker in PadMan, who aims to normalise talking about menstruation and goes on to invent a cheap sanitary napkin machine to help women in rural India. He based his character on the real-life PadMan, Coimbatore's Arunachalam Muruganantham. PadMan opened at Rs 10.26 crore.

Raid: As the name implies, this most recent entrant in this list is based on a raid, specifically a raid by an honest income tax officer along with his colleagues. This film stars Ajay Devgn, Ileana D'Cruz, and Saurabh Shukla and it is directed by Raj Kumar Gupta. Although the film has received mixed reviews, that has not stopped audiences from flocking to watch this film. It opened just short of PadMan at Rs 10.04 crore.

4.Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety: Probably the film with the lowest budget in this list, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety recycled the formula invented first by 2011's Pyar Ka Punchnama. It also featured the trio from that film, director Luv Ranjan and actors Kartik Aaryan and Nushrat Bharucha. Targeted towards youth and capitalising on the binaries between men and women in the popular Indian imagination, the film opened at an impressive Rs 6.42 crore.
5.Pari: Anushka Sharma's latest Pari was released on Holi, and this may have been the reason it opened on an underwhelming figure of Rs 4.36 crore. Touted as one of the few genuine horror films with an A-list actor, Pari nevertheless got pretty lukewarm audience reception. Average reviews coupled with not up to the mark word-of-mouth, this film was a disappointment by any yardstick.
