Difference Between PSL 1 And PSL 2

The American Petroleum Institute (API) establishes several requirements for the sale of line pipe. PSL-1 and PSL-2 are the API 5L pipe specifications. These specifications apply to seamless and welded steel line pipe in grades X42 through X80. API 5L pipe  is often used in the hydrocarbon petroleum and natural gas industries for transferring gas, water, and oil.

API 5L pipes are used to carry gas, water, and oil in the oil and natural gas industries. Line pipe may be used for both on- and off-shore oil and gas transmission and can meet all high-pressure transmission pipeline requirements for natural gas and petroleum.

Summary:

PSL stands for product specification levels. Because the product specification level pipeline is separated into PSL1 and PSL2, the quality level may also be classified into PSL1 and PSL2. PSL2 is higher than PSL2, these two specification levels not only have different testing requirements, but also different chemical composition and mechanical properties requirements, so when ordering according to API 5L, terms of the contract must also indicate the product specification level, ex PSL 1 or PSL 2. PSL2 is more strict than PSL 1 in terms of chemical composition, tensile qualities, impact energy, non-destructive testing, and other indications.

PSL-1 is a flexible quality standard for line pipe, but PSL-2 includes more testing requirements, tighter chemical physicals, different mechanical property ceiling constraints, and Charpy impact testing conditions.

 

The maximum carbon concentration for Seamless PSL1 pipe in grades B and above is 0.28 percent. In all grades, the maximum carbon concentration in PSL2 pipes is 0.24 percent.

 

The allowable carbon content for welded PSL1 pipe is 0.26 percent for grades B and higher. In all grades, the maximum carbon concentration in PSL2 welded pipes is 0.22 percent.

 

The second element is phosphorus; the maximum phosphorus content for PSL1 pipe is 0.03 percent for grades A and higher. In all grades, the maximum phosphorus concentration in PSL2 pipes is 0.03 percent.

 

The only difference is that this time the grade isn't an A.

Sulphur is the third element in the periodic table, with a maximum sulphur level of 0.03 percent in PSL1 pipe. The sulphur level of PSL2 pipes is restricted to 0.02 percent.
