What are Ball Valves?

A Ball valve is a flow control device that regulates the flow of liquid through it using a hollow, perforated, and rotating ball. When the ball's hole is parallel to the flow intake, the valve is open. When the ball is turned 90 degrees by the valve handle, the valve is closed, obstructing the flow. It is simple to visually confirm the condition of the valve since the handle sits flat in line with the flow when it is open and perpendicular to it when it is closed. The 1/4 turn in the closed position can be made either clockwise or counterclockwise.

3 Main Types of Ball Valves

Two Piece Ball Valves

Two-piece valves are the most often used type of ball valve. The body and a portion with a single-end connection make up the two-piece ball valve, as its name suggests. The second component, which integrates into the first and has the second-end connection, maintains the trim in place.

Three Piece Ball Valves

A three-piece ball valve is comprised of one main body and two pipe connections. Pipe connections are often threaded or welded to the pipe. As a consequence, disassembling the main body for cleaning or repairs is straightforward and doesn't need removing the pipe connections.

Fully Welded Ball Valve

A fully welded ball valve has the benefit of having a compact overall size, which allows for increased strength and a substantial decrease in weight. Additionally, because the body is made by joining forged parts together, there are fewer potential leak pathways than with side-entry and top-entry ball valves.
