Holi is celebrated for the victory of Hindu god Lord Vishnu over King Hiranykashyap, who stop Prahlada from worshiping Lord Vishnu. According to chapter 7 of Bhagwat Puran, King Hiranykashyap was blessed with 5 wishes that says that he can be neither killed by human nor by the animal, neither in a day nor in the night, neither inside nor outside, neither by Astra nor by Shastra and neither on land nor in water or air. Since he was an aasur (devil) god he wants everyone to worship him.

She was granted a cloak that could prevent her from the fire. She sat on the bonfire with Prahalada but suddenly that cloak flew from her and cover Prahalad and saved him and Holika was burnt. At last, Lord Vishnu took his fourth avatar of Narasimha, a half man and half lion(neither killed by human nor by animal), at the time of dawn (neither in day nor in night), took Hirnaykshyap at doorstep (neither inside nor outside),  with his lion paws (neither by Astra nor by Shastra) and by putting him on his laps(neither on land nor in water or air) killed him.
