Understanding Valves and Their Applications

What are valves?

Valves are mechanical devices that control the flow and pressure within a system or process. They are essential components of a piping system that conveys liquids, gases, vapors, slurries, etc. Different types of valves are available: gate, globe, plug, ball, butterfly, check, diaphragm, pinch, pressure relief, control valves, etc. Each of these types has a number of models, each with different features and functional capabilities. Some valves are self-operated while others are operated manually or with an actuator, pneumatically, or hydraulically.

5 Main Types of Ball Valves

Gate Valve

Gate valves are used to shut off the flow of liquids rather than for flow regulation. When fully open, the typical gate valve has no obstruction in the flow path, resulting in very low flow resistance. The size of the open flow path generally varies in a nonlinear manner as the gate is moved. This means that the flow rate does not change evenly with stem travel. Depending on the construction, a partially open gate can vibrate from the fluid flow. Gate valves are mostly used with larger pipe diameters since they are less complex to construct than other types of valves in large sizes.

Butterfly Valves

butterfly valve belongs to the quarter-turn valve family of valves. When the disc is turned a quarter turn, the valve is fully open or closed in operation. A metal disc that is placed on a rod is the "butterfly." The disc is rotated to completely block the channel when the valve is closed. The valve is spun a quarter turn once it is fully opened to allow the fluid to flow practically unhindered. To reduce flow, the valve can also be opened a little at a time.

Ball Valves

ball valve is a shut-off valve that controls the flow of a liquid or gas by means of a rotary ball having a bore. By rotating the ball a quarter turn (90 degrees) around its axis, the medium can flow through or be blocked. They are characterized by a long service life and provide a reliable seal over the life span, even when the valve is not in use for a long time.

Globe Valve

Globe valves are named for their spherical body shape, with the two halves of the body being separated by an internal baffle. This has an opening that forms a seat onto which a movable plug can be screwed in to close (or shut) the valve. The plug is also called a disc. In globe valves, the plug is connected to a stem, which is operated by screw action using a handwheel in manual valves. Typically, automated globe valves use smooth stems rather than threaded ones and are opened and closed by an actuator assembly.

Check Valves

Check valves are two-port valves, meaning they have two openings in the body, one for fluid to enter and the other for fluid to leave. There are various types of check valves used in a wide variety of applications. Check valves are often part of common household items. Although they are available in a wide range of sizes and costs, check valves are generally very small, simple, and inexpensive.
